COMPLAINT FILED ON BEHALF OF WAITRESS

FIRED FOR HAVING HAIRY LEGS

Somers, Conn, (LNS) Judith Quist, a waitress fired for refusing to shave her legs, has filed a sex discrimination suit charging that she has as much right to have hairy legs as men do. Quist was a part time worker at the Plaza Restaurant in Somers, Connecticut.

"I think that women have a right to do with their body hair what they want," said Quist. "I remember a few years ago when men changed to beards and moustaches. I think women should be free to change too."

Quist said she shaved her legs since eighth grade, but five years ago got sick of it. It's silly to remove something from your skin just because men believe you look better for it," she explained "Maybe once it's common, they'll get used to it".

WHAT'S HAPPENING

UFW CHARGES GALLO WITH MISLEADING ADVERTISING'. The United Farm Workers (UFW) has charged that Gallo's advertising for Madria Madria Sangria misleads customers who might want to boycott Gallo products in support of the UFW. In a complaint filed with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the UFW pointed out that commercials for Madria Madria do not identify it as a Gallo product, and imply that the drink is made by a "small Spanish-American" family winery.

The commercials feature a young woman who says in a Spanish accent that her husband and uncle make Madria Madria in the Spanish tradition". The woman is Ofelia Gallo and her husband and uncle are members of the Gallo family. However, the maker of the wine is identified as "Ricardo Madria Madria, Modesta, California". That name corresponds to no existing person or company. The protests have prompted the scheduling of federal hearings on a new bill requiring all food labels to show the maker, packager and distributor. Present law requires that only one of these be on the label.

FCC CHARGES MINNESOTA TV STATION WITH SEX DISCRIMINATION IN PROGRAMMING

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (LNS) The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) under pressure from a coalition of Minnesota women's groups, slapped KSTP.TV, the NBC affiliate, with two citations for discriminating against women in its programming. Though basically mild, the action by the FCC could be a factor when the station's license comes up for renewal.

The FCC decision was prompted by a complaint filed by the Minnesota Equal Rights Amendment Coalition, a group representing about 20 state and local women's organizations. The object of the action was a KSTP special called "Women's Lib, A Fraud?", which included anti-Equal Rights Amendment views.

The coalition demanded equal time to respond plus an added half hour to debate the anti-ERA people who appeared on the show. When KSTP officials refused, the coalition lodged its complaint with the FCC and Minnesota State Human Rights Department.

A WOMAN'S PLACE is a retreat for women, located in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Run by a collective of seven women and seven children, A Woman's Place was conceived of as a place to meet the needs of women.

The retreat is a place for women to go who have to get away from the pressures of daily life. It's a place to go for vacation, whether your needs are to be alone or to spend time with other women.

A minimal fee of $10 to $25 a day (depending on what you can afford) is asked of visiting women. Children are also welcome at a cost of $5 a day. We are currently seeking funding and non-profit status so we can reduce our rates. Call a week in advance to make reservations.

-

We would appreciate any contribution money or equipment for the retreat for we have no rich benefactors to pay our bills.

For more information on the retreat, write : A Woman's Place, Athol, New York 12810. Or call (518) 623-9541.
